Cards

Cards hold your actual content. This page covers everything you do with a single card. To act on several cards at once, see Working with several cards.

Most card actions are available three ways: with the mouse or touch, in the card’s context menu (right-click, or touch and hold on iPad and iPhone), and from the keyboard. Keyboard shortcuts act on the focused card. Click a card to focus it, or move between cards with the arrow keys.

  • Select the + button at the top or bottom of a column.
  • With a card focused, press N to add a card below it, or Option+N to add one above it.
  • With a column header focused, N adds a card at the bottom of the column and Option+N at the top.
  • Choose Add at top, Add above, Add below or Add at bottom from a card’s menu.

Type the text and press Enter. If you click elsewhere, the text you typed is kept as a new card. Press Escape to discard it.

While you’re editing a card, Cmd+↓ creates an empty card below it and Cmd+↑ one above, and starts editing the new card.

To start editing, do one of the following:

  • Double-click the card. The cursor goes where you clicked.
  • Focus the card and press Enter for the cursor at the end, or Shift+Enter for the cursor at the start.
  • Choose Edit text from the card’s menu.

While editing:

Key Action
Enter Save and stop editing
Shift+Enter New line
Escape Stop editing. If you changed something, FlowBoard asks whether to discard it.
Option+↑ / ↓ Move the current or selected lines up or down
Shift+Option+↑ / ↓ Duplicate the current or selected lines

On iPad and iPhone, a card opens in an edit dialog, unless the view options show it as Raw — edit directly. In the dialog, Return starts a new line. To save and close, select Save, tap beside the dialog, or press Cmd+Return on a hardware keyboard. Close stops editing and asks before discarding changes.

Cards use Markdown. Type the syntax yourself, or use these shortcuts on selected text:

Key Result
Cmd+B Bold
Cmd+I Italic
Cmd+U Underline
Cmd+Shift+X Strikethrough
Cmd+Shift+C Inline code
Cmd+Shift+K Link. The selected text becomes the link label.

For more options, select the Edit card button in the editor’s corner, or right-click inside the editor. Format… adds quotes, bullet lists and headings, and FlowBoard commands… adds tags and importance levels or changes the card’s display settings.

Press Cmd+K while editing:

  • With text selected, the selection moves into a new card.
  • Without a selection, everything after the cursor moves into a new card.

The new card appears below the original and keeps its tags and other properties. You keep editing the original card.

  • Drag it to another position or column.
  • Within its column: Option+↑ or Option+↓.
  • To the neighboring column: Option+← or Option+→. The Archive column is skipped.
  • To Done: press X. The card goes to the board’s Done column, or to the last regular column if the board has none.
  • From the menu: Move to previous column, Move to next column, Move to…, and the entries for the Done and Archive columns.

To move a card to another board, cut it and paste it there. See Copy, cut and paste cards.

  • Shift+Option+↑ or ↓ places a copy above or below. The copy is tagged #duplicate, so you can find it again.
  • Shift+Option+← or → places a copy in the previous or next column.
  • The card menu offers Duplicate to top, Duplicate above, Duplicate below and Duplicate to bottom.
  • Copy card in the card’s menu copies the card. Cmd+X cuts it: the card is removed until you paste it. If you change your mind, Cmd+Z brings it back.
  • To paste, open the menu of a card where the copy should go, on any board, and choose a position under Paste cards: at top, above, below or at bottom.
  • Copy text copies only the card’s text to the system clipboard.

Pressing Cmd+V on a focused card doesn’t paste a card. It starts editing that card and pastes the clipboard into its text.

  • Press Delete to move the focused card to the Archive column. You can drag it back later.
  • Press Delete on a card that is already in the Archive to delete it for good.
  • Press Cmd+Delete to delete a card permanently without archiving it. FlowBoard asks for confirmation first.

Cmd+Z undoes deletions too.

To keep the board compact, cards can show only their first lines:

  • The collapse button in the header collapses or expands every card on the board. The same button in a column header does it for that column only.
  • Add ::collapse in a card’s menu keeps that card collapsed.

Hold Cmd on a collapsed card to preview its full content. Set how many lines a collapsed card shows under Settings → Appearance → Collapsed card lines.

Cmd-click a card to open it in a larger preview without editing it.
