FlowBoard can turn your work into files for other people and other tools. You can export the whole document, the current board, or a single column.

Interactive stories have their own exports, for the Ren’Py and Ink game engines. See Export to Ren’Py, Ink and JSON.

  1. Open Settings → Export.
  2. Adjust the options, if needed (see below).
  3. Select an export button.
Button Result
Export as PDF Opens a paged preview. On Mac, select Save PDF, or Print… to print. On iPad and iPhone, select Print / Save PDF, then save or share the PDF from the print options.
Export as DOCX An editable Word document with boards and columns as headings, styled after the selected PDF template
Export as HTML An HTML file plus a CSS file you can edit to change the look
Export as Markdown Plain Markdown with boards as headings and cards as content blocks. It follows your Read View display options.
Export as Plain Text Readable text that keeps the board and column structure, without Markdown formatting
Export as Fountain Screenplay text from cards written in Fountain
Export as JSON All board data in a structured format for other tools

For plain text, Markdown, Fountain and JSON, you can copy the result to the clipboard instead of saving a file.

A full export contains every board, except the boards whose Full export option is turned off in their context menu. Within each board, it contains every column except the Archive and Reference columns.

To include or leave out a single column, right-click the eye button in the column’s header, open the Read tab, and turn Export on or off.

  • Image syntax writes images as Obsidian, Markdown or HTML references.
  • Asset paths writes file references as a Full path, Relative path, or Filename only.
  • Export prefix is added in front of every exported file name.
  • Quote style converts quotation marks in the exported files, for example to German or French quotes. Your cards stay unchanged. Keep as written leaves quotes alone.

The PDF settings in Settings → Export also shape the DOCX export:

  • PDF template: Clean PDF, Manuscript, Research Dossier or Publisher Handoff
  • Page size (A4 or Letter), Margins, and the Start page number
  • Header and Footer: what appears on the left, center and right, such as the document title, section title, date or page number
  • Footnotes as page footnotes, board endnotes or document endnotes
  • Whether each board or column starts on a new page, how images are sized, whether there’s a Title page, and the font, font size, line height, card separators and how much card metadata is shown

The export button in the header saves or copies the current board. Right-click it, or touch and hold, to choose what it does:

  • Save board as Markdown or Save board as Plain Text
  • Copy board as Markdown or Copy board as Plain Text

After that, a click repeats your last choice.

Select the export button in a column’s header to save that column as a Markdown file.

  • Import brings text and documents into FlowBoard.
  • Read View controls which card details the Markdown export includes.
