Import
Import turns existing notes and documents into boards, columns and cards. FlowBoard shows you the result before anything is added. Imported boards are appended to the current document, after its existing boards.

- Select Import Markdown/Text and choose a file. Markdown and other plain-text files
(such as
.mdand.txt) and Word documents (.docx) are supported. - Check the Import preview. It shows the detected format and how many columns and cards will be created.
- Select Append to document, or Cancel import to stop.
Import from the clipboard
Section titled “Import from the clipboard”Copy text in another app, then select Import from Clipboard in Settings → Import. Markdown is kept as it is. Formatted text is converted to Markdown where possible. The same preview appears before anything is added.
How content is converted
Section titled “How content is converted”Markdown:
| In the source | Becomes |
|---|---|
Level-one heading (#) |
A board |
Level-two heading (##) |
A column |
| Each list item | A card |
| Each paragraph, deeper heading, table or code block | A card |
Content that comes before the first level-one heading goes into a board named after the file. Content that comes before the first level-two heading goes into a column called Imported.
Plain text: each paragraph (text separated by a blank line) becomes a card in a column called Imported, on a board named after the file.
Word documents: if the document uses numbered sections such as 1.1 Introduction, each
section becomes a column and its list items become cards. Otherwise its text is converted
like Markdown or plain text.
FlowBoard documents: a file that is already in FlowBoard’s format is imported with its boards, columns and cards unchanged.
After conversion:
- Every imported board gets its own empty Archive column. A column in the source that is itself called Archive is renamed Archive (Imported), so it stays a normal column.
- If an imported board has the same name as an existing board, it gets a new, unique name.
- Documents, boards, columns and cards explains the structure your content is converted into.
- Export goes the other way.
