Saved Prompts and Story Style

Instructions you type again and again can be saved as custom prompts, and guidance that applies to the whole story belongs in the story style. Both are stored in the document, so they travel with the file to your other devices. Instructions you’ve sent recently are kept too, on this device only, so you can use them again without saving them first.

In the panel’s Request section, Prompt lists the prompts for the current tab: My prompts, the custom prompts saved in the document, then FlowBoard’s Built-in starters. Choose Write your own prompt to type an instruction from scratch. Beside the list, Built-in or Custom shows where the chosen prompt comes from, and Manage prompts… opens all of them in Settings.

The Draft starters are named for what a card represents in your story organization, and the four Edit starters for acts, sequences, scenes and beats work with it. See Organize a story into acts, scenes and beats.

When you choose one, the panel shows its instruction, and the field below becomes Additional instructions (optional). What you type there is added to the instruction for this request only.

A starter is listed only where it fits:

  • Fit the surrounding text needs text selected in the card editor.
  • Smooth transition in and Lead into what follows work on one whole card that has something before or after it.
  • Match the character sheets appears when a character in the text has a character sheet.
  • Explain Story Health appears when FlowBoard has Story Health findings for the cards.
  • Merge selected needs at least two cards.
  • Organize into acts, Organize into sequences, Split into scenes and Split into beats appear only where your story organization has that level and the selection can be organized that way.

The context a starter adds appears under Can read with a line naming the starter, and you can remove any that is optional before you send. Added context is only read: it never widens what the request can change. A custom prompt you make from a starter keeps the context it adds, and is listed for every request in its category.

When you send a request, AI Assist remembers what you wrote. Above the instruction field, Recent instructions lists your recent instructions for the current mode: the ones from this document first, then those from Other documents. Select one to put it back in the field. Nothing is sent: change it if you like, then send it as usual.

  • Only your own words are kept. A prompt you used without adding anything isn’t listed, since you can choose it again. What you typed under Additional instructions is kept with the starter’s name, for example “With Proofread”. Choosing it selects that starter again, and the context the starter adds appears under Can read as usual. If the starter isn’t offered for this request, only your text comes back, and AI Assist says so.
  • FlowBoard’s own defaults aren’t kept unless you change them, such as the instruction a Story Map proposal starts with. Each Story Map proposal has its own list.
  • The list holds your 20 most recent instructions across all modes. Sending one again moves it to the top.
  • Remove drops one entry. Settings → AI Assist → Clear recent instructions empties the list at once. Your custom prompts, AI Jobs and your connections stay as they are.

Recent instructions are stored on this device and aren’t part of your document. They’re your own input, not a conversation: FlowBoard keeps no answers, and nothing in the list is sent until you send it again. To keep an instruction with the document, save it as a custom prompt.

The quickest way is from the panel, while you work:

  1. Write the instruction, or choose a prompt and add to it.
  2. Select Save as custom prompt… next to the instruction.
  3. Enter a Name, and choose the Category: Draft, Rewrite, Edit or Ask. It starts as the current tab.
  4. Check Prompt to save, which shows the complete prompt: the chosen prompt together with what you added.
  5. Select Save prompt.

The prompt is saved in the document right away and appears under My prompts in its category. Your current request and its result stay as they are. It keeps the context a starter adds, but not your selection, scope, connection or model. Two custom prompts in the same category can’t share a name.

To manage all your prompts:

  1. Open Settings → AI Assist and go to Prompts, or select Manage prompts… in the panel.
  2. Choose a category: Draft, Rewrite, Edit or Ask. Each lists My prompts and Built-in starters.
  3. Select Add prompt for a new one, or Customize a copy… beside a starter to start from its wording.
  4. Enter the Name, Category and Prompt text, for example “Check whether the selected character’s actions and dialogue are consistent with what they know at this point.”
  5. Select Save settings.

To change a custom prompt, select it and edit its name, category or text. Changing its category moves it. Remove deletes it. These changes take effect when you save the settings, and Cancel discards them. Built-in starters can’t be changed: customize a copy instead.

A prompt supplies only the wording. What it produces is reviewed exactly like a request you type: proposed cards, rewrites and edit plans still wait for you to apply them.

Story style is guidance sent with every AI Assist request for this document, for example “Past tense, close third person. Keep dialogue clipped.” Enter it in Settings → AI Assist and select Save settings.

Temperature in the same section is the sampling temperature FlowBoard sends with each request, from 0 to 2. The default is 0.7. It is saved in the document too.
